イスタンブール (Istanbul) はボスポラス海峡に面した、トルコ最大の都市。

概要
イスタンブールは、まずボスポラス海峡を挟んでアジア側 (ユスキュダルがある方) とヨーロッパ側に大きく分けることができ、ヨーロッパ側はさらに金角湾を挟んで旧市街 (海峡に向かって右側) と新市街 (同左側) に分けることができる。旧市街にはトプカプ宮殿やブルーモスク、アヤソフィアなどの観光スポットがあり、一方対岸の新市街にはガラタ塔やドルマバフチェ宮殿、軍事博物館などの観光スポットがある。両者はガラタ橋など湾を跨ぐいくつかの橋で両岸が結ばれている。またヨーロッパ側とアジア側についてもフェリーや橋で両岸が結ばれている。

地下鉄（チュネル）で
新市街、ガラタ橋近くのカラキョイからイスティクラル通入口まで通っている地下鉄。意外と知られていないがヨーロッパ最古の地下鉄である。もっとも地下鉄というより、高低差のある両地点を結ぶエレベーターに近く、営業距離も700ｍくらいで、2分も乗っていれば着いてしまう。もちろん両地点を歩くこともできるが、面白い乗り物だし、庶民の足として使われているため料金も安い（1回30円くらい）ので、一度試してみるとよい。実際、上り坂となるカラキョイ→イスティクラルの移動にはとても便利な乗り物である。
