アントウェルペン: Guide



アントウェルペン（km²、人口密度 は 2,225.51　人/km²。

ダイヤモンド取引およびカット・研磨の中心として著名である。また港湾|海港としても知られ、貨物船が多く来航する。1990年代からはファッションの街としても知られる。これは王立美術学校の何人かの卒業生がモード界で国際的な成功を収めたことに起因する。

シェルト川が市内を貫流する。アントウェルペンは世界最大級の港の一つであり、シェルト川を通じて北海およびと繋がっている。

アントウェルペン動物園は、世界でも最古また最も有名な動物園のひとつである。この動物園は市の中心部にあり、4000種以上の動物を飼育している。王立動物学協会は多くの動物の扱いを見守っており、100年以上に渡って絶滅危惧種の保護にあたってきた。

アントウェルペンには大きな正統派ユダヤ人（ハシディズム）のコミュニティがあり、そこから「西のイェルサレム」との綽名がある。

八十年戦争においては、1576年11月4日にスペインに占領され、三日間でほとんど街が破壊された。

第二次世界大戦中はドイツに占領され、1944年9月4日にイギリス第11機甲師団（11th Armored Divison）によって解放された。連合軍はアントウェルペン港を物資の搬送に使ったため、この後、ドイツ軍はアントウェルペン港を破壊しようと試みた。街は第二次大戦史上最多のV2ロケットで爆撃されたが、港は爆撃による破壊を免れた。しかしながら街自体はこの爆撃で大きな被害を受けた。

街の名アントウェルペンは、市内を流れるシェルト川に住んだという伝説の巨人に由来する。この巨人は川の関守だった。巨人があるとき倒されると、その手は裁断され、川に「手が投げ込まれた」（フラマン語：hand werpen）。ここからアントウェルペンの名が起こったという。

アントウェルペンは1920年のアントワープオリンピック (1920年)|夏季オリンピックの開催地でもある。

文化


アントウェルペンにはアントワープ王立芸術学院があり、優れたファッション・デザイナーを輩出している。特に1980年代に頭角を現してきた6人は「アントワープの6人」と呼ばれ、現在でも国際的に活躍している。
アニメで一躍有名となった物語、フランダースの犬の舞台でもあるが、現地の人にはあまり知られておらず、ゆかりの地を訪ねてやってくる観光客はほとんど日本人である。
